It tests a student's potential or ability to understand and use English as it is used in a college or university particularly in USA and Canada .
TOEFL score will help admission authorities to determine whether he or she has requisite knowledge of English language skills to be admitted to the program applied for.
It also measures proficiency in English and is accepted by many other countries like UK , Japan , Korea , Hong Kong , Singapore etc .
FORMAT OF TEST:
Exam is administered by ETS i.e. Educational Testing Service- a testing organization which conducts exams like GRE, SAT, GMAT and other like standardized tests. Till 2006 April ,TOEFL was a structure based test and was called TOEFL (CBT) i.e. a computer based test which did not have the speaking section but of structure instead. This test actually measures both receptive and expressive skills in a coherent manner. The next generation TOEFL (IBT) test is internet based and tests all four language skills: listening, Reading , speaking and writing which are important for effective communication. The content of the new TOEFL test reflects the language that is used in real academic settings. The aim of the test is to enable students to demonstrate their ENGLISH language skills. ADMINISTRATION OF THE NEW TEST- There are fixed dates on which the test will be administered via the Internet at ETS certified test centers. |

How Test Questions Are Created
Language specialists prepare TOEFL test questions and follow rigorous, standardized procedures to ensure that test material is of consistent high quality. Each question is reviewed by several ETS staff members. The TOEFL Committee of Examiners � an independent group of professionals in the fields of linguistics, language testing and language teaching that reports to the TOEFL Board � establishes guidelines for test content.
After test questions have been reviewed and revised, they are administered in trial situations and assembled into tests. Tests are reviewed according to ETS and TOEFL program procedures to ensure that all tests are free of cultural bias. Statistical analyses of individual questions ensure that all items provide appropriate measurement information.
Fee for the exam:Â Â Â Â Â Â Â $165 (subject to change). There are three ways per which you can register with the exam.

SCORING: |
The score requirement varies from institution to institution and there is no passing score. In the TOEFL score report one can see the following:
- A separate score of 0-30 for each of the four language skill;
- A total test score of 0-120
- A TOEFL CBT score comparison.
